Watch for these documents! Or risk delaying your refund.

The good news is, there are thousands of dollars’ worth of tax credits this year for eligible taxpayers. The bad news is, if you don’t file your returns correctly, the IRS could delay your refund. That’s why it’s important to watch for these documents in the mail.If the numbers on your return don't match the amounts reported on these documents, it could delay your refund by weeks, even months. Here's what you need to know.

Watch for these documents

Look for the IRS logo and “Important Tax Documents” on the envelope.

  • Advanced Child Credit, Letter 6419
IRS timeframe for these letters: late December-mid January
  • Economic Impact Payment (Stimulus 3) Letter 6475
IRS timeframe for this letter: mid-January 2022

Can't find these letters?

No worries. Open an IRS account here to get copies.

You’ll also need these documents

  • W-2(s)
You’ll get your W-2s from the companies you worked for in 2021. Your employers will mail these no later than January 31. Many companies also allow you to get these online.
  • 1099s
You’ll get 1099s if you had unemployment, self-employment, gig, or investment income in 2021.
  • Marketplace Health Insurance Form 1095-A
You’ll get this form if you get your healthcare through your state’s Health Insurance Marketplace.
  • Your 2019 tax returns if you’re claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
This year, you have the option to use your 2019 or your 2021 earned income to claim the EITC. You can choose whichever year results in a larger credit.
  • Government ID
You’ll need your license, passport, or other government-issued picture ID to file.

Of course, depending on your situation, you may need other documents and receipts to file an accurate return, one that will get you every credit, deduction—and dollar—you deserve. Use this tool to customize your own personal checklist.
