IRS NOTICES: TAX RETURN ERROR

What is a CP24 notice?

Jo Willetts, EA

Director, Tax Resources

Published on: June 10, 2020

IRS notices are letters sent to inform taxpayers of important tax information. Each one is different, but we can explain what the CP24 is about.

Understanding your CP24 notice

You paid more taxes than you should have. The IRS found that there was a difference between the amount of estimated tax payments on your tax return and the amount that the IRS posted to your tax account. There may be other changes found while processing your return.

The IRS adjusted your tax return to correct the difference and you may be receiving an additional refund.

Type of Notice

Return discrepancy.

Why you received the CP24 notice

You received a CP24 notice because you paid your estimated tax and the payment did not match the IRS records. The IRS corrected the difference, likely resulting in an additional refund for you.

Likely next steps

As always, read the notice carefully.

If you agree with the IRS assessment, you will need to correct the tax return you use for your records to reflect the change. You do not need to contact the IRS or respond to the notice.

If you disagree with the IRS, you will need to contact the IRS within 60 days of the date you received the notice. To learn more, visit the IRS page, Understanding Your CP24 Notice.

CP24 Notice deadline

There is no deadline for this notice unless you disagree with the IRS assessment.

If you miss the deadline

There is only a deadline if you disagree with the IRS assessment of your return. If so, you have 60 days from the date of your notice to dispute the IRS findings.
