IRS NOTICES: TAX RETURN ERRORS

What is a CP11 Notice?

Jo Willetts, EA

Director, Tax Resources

Published on: June 10, 2020

IRS notices are letters sent to inform taxpayers of important tax information. Each one is different, but we can explain what the CP11 is about.

Understanding your CP11 notice

The IRS made changes to your tax return because the IRS believes there were miscalculations. You now owe money on your taxes based on the IRS calculations.

Type of Notice

Tax return error

Why you received the CP11 notice

You received an CP11 notice because the IRS believes you owe them money due to mistaken calculations in your tax return.

Likely next steps

Carefully read the notice, which will outline the changes made to your return, the amount of money you owe the IRS, and the date the payment is due.

If you agree with the IRS, you will need to either pay the taxes owed in entirety by the due date or set up a payment plan. You can also contact a tax professional to learn more about your options.

If you do not agree with the IRS, you need to contact the IRS within 60 days of the date of your notice either by phone or mail.

CP11 Notice deadline

Your CP11 will include a due date for your payment. You can avoid interest on your balance due by paying the balance by the due date on the notice. If you don’t pay the balance in a timely fashion, the interest will be accrued from the due date of the return.

If you miss the deadline

If you miss the payment deadline in the CP11, you could face a late payment penalty. Contact the IRS at the number provided on the notice. Offer to pay what you can and set up a payment plan. This will help reduce the penalty and interest due on the amount you owe.
