What is IRS Notice 1444?

Published on: September 01, 2020

IRS notices are sent to inform taxpayers of important information concerning their taxes. Each one is different, and here we explain Notice 1444.

Understanding Notice 1444

You were sent Notice 1444 because you received an economic impact payment (EIP), commonly known as a “stimulus payment". Notice 1444 is sent to each stimulus recipient within 15 days of the IRS issuing payment. The notice includes the following:

  • The amount of the payment

  • A phone number to call with issues

  • Where to find information about the payment on irs.gov

  • How the payment was made i.e. direct deposit, check, or debit card

  • A reminder to keep the notice with your taxpayer records for your 2020 tax return.

The notice also explains that a payment can be seized by the Bureau of Fiscal Service (BFS) to offset delinquent child support. No other delinquent debts may be offset with the stimulus payment.

Type of Notice

Economic impact payment (stimulus payment) update.

Why you received IRS Notice 1444

Notice 1444 was issued by the IRS because a stimulus payment was sent to you. It should be kept with other tax documents to be used in preparing and filing your 2020 taxes.

Likely Next Steps

As always, read the notice carefully. It contains information regarding the amount of your economic impact (stimulus) payment, how the payment was made, and what to do if any (or all) of your stimulus payment was not received.

IRS Notice 1444 deadline

This notice has no deadline. It should be kept with other tax documents for end of year preparation and filing purposes. For additional information on Notice 1444 and other stimulus-related resources, review the IRS’ Economic Impact Payment page. If you still have questions, ask a Tax Pro.
